Self Love

Updated: May 12, 2023

Self-love is relating to yourself with compassion, honesty, and openness. It is nourishing yourself deeply without becoming self-centered or egotistical; no longer seeing yourself as less than others but maintaining the humility not to see yourself as better than others.” ~ yung pueblo

Self-love is an awareness and practice upon which arises our personal growth and fulfillment.

It is the foundation of the four pillars of spiritual development: self-love, loving others, accessing the divine, and awakening the goddess, I’ll be exploring in Costa Rica during our April retreat, and briefly presenting here in the next few newsletters.

First, it is important to state what self-love is not; it is not about being overly selfish or self-indulgent. It is not about being conceited or arrogant, never considering others’ needs or making sacrifices. It is about truly knowing oneself, and taking the time and consideration to nurture one’s needs, physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Self-love is essentially our first commitment, a commitment to ourselves, our well-being, our mental and physical health, our healing, our self-realization and spiritual growth. It is through this ability, this superpower, that we learn and build our capacity to do this not only for ourselves, but sincerely and truly for others.

One of my dearest teachers, Amrit Desai, said, “Love requires perpetual self-acceptance. Love reveals who you really are; if you are unwilling to accept yourself, love will cease to grow. Self-acceptance is the beginning of self-love. Self-love is the source of the love you feel for everyone and everything.”

Our tendency to self-deprecate, self-loath, self-blame, and believe we are unworthy are the greatest hinderances to our growth and our ability to truly give and receive our birthright of love. Fortunately, there are paths and practices which can free us from these beliefs and open us to the experience and truth of deep abiding peace and love.

I look forward to meeting you there.
